Mislabeling your products can harm your business's reputation and cause you to lose sales. Customers want to be able to find all the information they need without having to look hard for it. Moreover, similar to food and beverage, the FDA requires cosmetic products to be labeled properly. Below is a list of common labeling mistakes and how to fix them before you start selling your products.
To prevent misbranding, you need to make sure the front of the label properly lists what the actual product is. For example, “Rose Scented Lotion” would be the proper name for a skin lotion that smells like roses because a fragrance is added to the product. However, if instead the label states “Rose Lotion” this would imply that the lotion contains roses and if it did not contain roses themselves the product would be considered misbranded.
FDA requires products that make at least one claim to include an ingredient list on the label. For example, if your product states “helps to smooth wrinkles” you need to list the ingredients on the rear panel of the label. Failure to do so will result in the FDA deeming your product as misbranded and you will be subject to fines and penalties.
When listing the ingredients on your label, they must be in descending order by concentration. For example, if the main ingredient is water, it would be listed first. If jojoba oil is the least, then it would be listed last.
FDA requires all labels to list the manufacturer or distributor’s contact information. Failure to list contact information can put you in some serious trouble with FDA.
FDA requires your label to be in a specific font size in order to make sure certain disclosures are not hidden from sight by small text. Moreover, it can be extremely inconvenient for your customers if your font is too small that they have difficulty locating the information important to their decision on whether to purchase your product. To avoid legal issues make sure your font complies with the FDA regulations..
